Gearbox discusses Aliens: Colonial Marines, Brothers in Arms, secret Pitchford-directed title, and more

During today’s Gearbox Software panel, the developer took the opportunity to assuage concerns that new franchises like Borderlands and Duke Nukem are siphoning away time from its previous projects, like the Brothers in Arms series or the announced-in-2009-and-still-invisible Aliens: Colonial Marines. Pitchford even commented on one of the studio’s three unannounced projects.

Hyundai giving $200 a car to children’s cancer charity this month
Â
With National Childhood Cancer Awareness month underway, Hyundai Motor America has announced plans to donate $100,000 to 68 hospitals and non-profit organizations ($6.8 million total) in the form of “Hope Grants.” The bulk of the money will be raised by Hyundai’s U.S. sales network, now more than 800 dealers strong, who will contribute $200 from the sale of each vehicle in September.
“While we’ve made progress over the last few decades and now have an 85 percent cure rate, cancer still takes more lives than any other childhood disease,” said John Krafcik, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “This September, in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Hyundai will shine a nationwide spotlight on this cause and provide more than $6 million in grants for pediatric cancer research and support programs. We love taking on big challenges at Hyundai, and we can think of no more worthy challenge than finding a cure for all forms of pediatric cancer.”

Nvidia releases complete Fermi-based mobile DirectX 11 lineup
Over the past several months, a significant portion of the mobile DirectX 11 market has been predominated by AMD Radeon Mobility 5000 Series parts. The red team has enjoyed a fair share of design wins, and one of the highest selling points can be attributed to the DirectX 11 feature itself. Nevertheless, the time has arrived for Nvidia to respond with a slew of second-generation mobile Fermi parts catered for a variety of high-end, performance and mainstream budgets.
Back in May, Nvidia launched its flagship Geforce GTX 480M for gamers and mobile enthusiast customers. What surprised most of the industry was the fact that the company had actually used a full GF100 chip which featured the same number of cores as the desktop Geforce GTX 465. Mobile power constraints were tight and exceptionally high, as the GPU consumed 100W alone. Nevertheless, the company has indicated that it intends to capitalize on Optimus Technology as a means to dynamically distribute power between an IGP-enabled GPU and its discreet GPUsHigh-end GPUs: Geforce GTX 480M, Geforce GTX 470M, Geforce GTX 460M
Today, the company has added the Geforce GTX 470M and Geforce GTX 460M to its high-end mobile DirectX 11 offering, which only included the Geforce GTX 480M up until this point. The Geforce GTX 470M features a 535MHz core clock, 288 CUDA cores operating at 1100MHz, and a 192-bit GDDR5 memory interface operating at 1250MHz with 60GB/s memory bandwidth. This GPU replaces the Geforce GTX 260M with 55W TDP and should fit in a similar power envelope. As AnandTech noted, the core count between generations raises from 112 at 1375MHz to 288 at 1250MHz, an increase of 134 percent. The chip should theoretically double computational performance over its predecessor. However, the memory bandwidth of both GTX 260M and GTX 470M is 60GB/s, and it will be interesting to observe if Nvidias decision to leave memory bandwidth the same may have any effects on gaming performance.
In addition, the Geforce GTX 460M features a 675MHz core clock, 192 CUDA cores operating at 1350MHz, and a 192-bit GDDR5 memory interface

Nvidia silently rolls out its Geforce GT 420
In addition to the full lineup of mobile Geforce 400M GPUs, Nvidia has silently listed the Geforce GT 420 as well. Based on a 40nm GPU, possibly the GF108, the Geforce GT 420 can be considered to be the first low-end Fermi derived card with support for DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.

AMDs Fusion Ontario APU Chip Pictured
At the ongoing IFA event in Berlin, AMD displayed one of the first derivatives of its Bobcat low-power x86 processor architecture, codenamed “Ontario”. This Fusion APU (accelerated processing unit), which is a combination of an x86 CPU and a DirectX 11 compliant GPU is built for low-power devices such as netbooks, handhelds, and tablets. AMD also showed off the chip package itself, which is roughly the size of a 1 Euro coin. The package, like AMDs mobile Athlon/Phenom processors, has no integrated heatspreader (IHS), but like the Intel Atom, uses a ball-grid array (BGA) to permanently fix itself to the system board
