AMD launches first six-core Opteron EE processor with 40W ACP

AMD today launches one Istanbul six-core Opteron 2419聽EE (energy efficient) processors designed for 2P servers聽with only 40W of ACP聽(average power consumption).Opteron 2419聽EE based on 45nm SOI process comes in a Socket 1207 package and runs at 1.8GHz,has 6MB of L3 cache and 1.125V of core voltage. At the same time, the new six-core chip also includes the AMD-V virtualization technology, as AMDs AMD-P power management mechanisms with a price tag of $989.

“Its important for our industry to look at how technology is being used and where customers have emerging needs,” said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation Division. “The AMD Opteron EE processor enables OEMs to deliver energy-sipping servers that don鈥檛 compromise on power management, virtualization or performance features. It is specifically designed to help address the challenges that are generating a great deal of discussion these days - building and running very dense data centers for Web services, while doing more with less.”

Now,six-core Istanbule family聽contains 11 members, including this 40W ultra low power modle, two 105W聽SE,five 75W standard modle as well as three 55W聽HE CPUs.

AMD claims that new 40W six-core CPU is聽aimed for cloud computing and聽Web 2.0 applications as well as dense computing environments. It is said to聽deliver 31% higher performance-per-watt over standard quad-core Opterons.
