45nm Opterons surface in e-tail listings
AMDs 45nm quad-core Opteron processors are closing in. CNet news has spotted listings for the upcoming chips at two online retailers鈥擯C Connection and Buy.com. Those listings show four eight-way Opterons and two two-way models, all with clock speeds between 2.4GHz and 2.7GHz.The Opteron 8384鈥攖he fastest of the bunch鈥攚ill set you back $2,336 if you pre-order it at Buy.com right now. The same e-tailer also offers a $2,027 Opteron 8382, a $1,646 Opteron 8380, and a $1,266 Opteron 8378. Those prices arent exactly low, but all of these CPUs should work in eight-socket systems, and CNet News says they run at respective speeds of 2.7GHz, 2.6GHz, 2.5GHz, and 2.4GHz.
On the two-socket front, Buy.com also lists a 2.6GHz Opteron 2382 for $949 and a 2.5GHz Opteron 2380 for $759. You can get these two chips (and the four 8300-series specimens) for a few bucks less by grabbing heatsink-less versions, though. PC Connection lists the same models, but with (substantially) higher prices.
CNet News quotes “industry sources” as saying AMD will officially unveil 45nm Opterons on November 13. AMDs Pat Patla confirmed last month that servers touting these new CPUs will ship this quarter, and he also claimed that 45nm Opterons will perform 20% better clock-for-clock than todays offerings.
