A number of web sites have popped up in the past year or two that allow you to watch streaming audio of mainstream TV shows and movies. The web sites exploit a legal gray area because they don’t actually host the files. Instead they’re hosted on video sites like YouTube, Veoh, and Chinese video sharing sites like Youku and 56.com. That doesn’t mean that the videos weren’t illegally uploaded, it just means that sites like SurfTheChannel and SideReel aren’t responsible for distributing the videos. All they’ve done is copied a bit of embed code onto their page.

Crawlanime operates the same way. But while SurfTheChannel, Sidereel, and others focus on mainstream movies and TV shows, Crawlanime specializes is anime which is a particular type of animation, typically from Japan.

The site features a pretty impressive collection of anime. And while you can’t find every single episode of every show, there’s a good chance you will find most shows you’re looking for. Or you could actually shell out a few bucks and order a DVD and watch higher quality versions of your favorite shows. But Crawlanime does present a nice try before you buy option.
